Q3 & YTD Performance Reports + Q4 CER

Updated on 10/8/2024

Performance Reports Overview

For these reports, we selected the top 25 S&P 500 stocks by market cap and the top 5 chip stocks (3 were in the top 25 stocks). We also selected the Sector SPDR ETFs, QQQ, RSP (equally weighted S&P 500 stocks), and SMH (semiconductor ETF).
We compared the stocks and ETFs' Q3 and year-to-date performance to:
  • CER (their 5-year weighted average adjusted for recency)
  • SPY
  • SPDR Sector ETF
  • Beta Adjusted Excess Return - We used the stocks and ETFs’ upside beta for this calculation, which is based on 5-year monthly returns
  • Q4 CER
We typically provide three versions for these types of reports that are the same but sorted alphabetically, by performance, and by sector. One of the many benefits of using the Volworks Platform directly is that these reports can be filtered, sorted, and queried instantly and then exported to PDFs or Excel.

Insights

  • While TSLA had an excellent Q3 by all measures, it is only up 5.3% YTD. Its YTD performance significantly underperformed its CER by 77.7% and its beta-adjusted return by 20.3%.
  • ORCL had a great Q3 and its YTD return of 61.6% is behind only NVDA, TSM, and META.
  • MSFT is the most consistent stock in the group. Its Q3 return of (-3.7%) was very close to its CER of (-3.4%). Its YTD return of 14.4% is also very close to its YTD CER of 14.6%. Based on this, we have high conviction for the Q4 CER of 12.7%. We recommend MSFT as a strong overweight and/or very bullish booster trades for January 2025 expiration.
  • Stocks to underweight in Q4 are: GOOGL and AMZN. We also recommend considering aggressive 30-day covered calls and/or put spread collars on both stocks.
  • Sector ETFs we like for Q4 are: XLI, XLFXLRE, and surprisingly XLE.
  • Energy is the best-performing sector from Q4-Q1. It’s also the strongest sector in an election year from election day to inauguration day. Please contact us for our detailed election analysis that goes back to 1960.
